Improving environmental management in mining

VEA - In the morning of November 25, in Hanoi, the Vietnam Environment Administration (VEA) held a workshop on "preliminary assessment of 3-year implementation of the Decision No. 71/2008/QD-TTg of the Prime Minister on deposit for environmental renovation and rehabilitation of mining activities". VEA Deputy General Director Dr. Hoang Duong Tung attended and chaired the workshop.
Mr. Nguyen Van Khuong, Deputy Director of the Legislation Department of the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MoNRE), Mr. Nguyen Hoai Duc, Deputy Director of the Waste Management and Environmental Improvement Department of VEA with over 60 delegates representing for 30 DONREs in the North.
Speaking at the workshop, Deputy General Director Dr. Hoang Duong Tung said the Party and Government are interested in the environmental protection and restoration in mineral exploitation activities. Therefore, to further promote the prevention and control of environmental pollution caused by mining activities, the Prime Minister has directed the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment to continue to modify and improve the Decision No. 71/2008 /QĐ-TTg to meet the new requirements. This is a complete basis of legal regulations for environmental protection in mining to suit the new requirements.
Delegates discussed and evaluated the implementation of regulations on margin environmental improvement and restoration for the mining activities at the local level, sharing and dissemination of experience and models.
In addition, the existing difficulties in the implementation of margin environmental improvement and restoration are outlined. On that basis, the participants proposed solutions to remedy, improve the management quality in the future.
The Department of Waste Management and Environmental Improvement proposed a draft Decision for replacing the Decision No. 71/2008/QD-TTg of the Prime Minister and asked participants, professionals contribute ideas for improvement before submitting the Decision to the Prime Minister.
After three years of implementation of margin environmental improvement and restoration for the mining operation, there were 54 environmental restoration and renovation projects approved by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment with the total amount was 650 billion VND, the People's Committees of provinces and cities approved over 1,300 projects with over 700 billion VND./.
